Why DEF is Mandatory in India

In April 2020, India implemented BS6 emission norms, aligning with Euro VI standards. Under these norms:
  • All heavy-duty diesel vehicles are required to use the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to control emissions.
  • The SCR system requires DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to operate effectively.
  • As per the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) guidelines, using ISO 22241-compliant DEF is mandatory.
  • This ensures regulatory compliance, protects engine safety, and reduces harmful NOx emissions.

Non-compliance (like running without DEF or using substandard fluid) can lead to

  • Vehicle performance issues
  • Engine warning lights
  • Possible fines and warranty voids
